"Then let us know, and go on to know the LORD; his going forth like the dawn, is certain; and he will come to us as the rain, as the latter rain that waters the earth." (Hosea 6:3)
God is the Eternal and Supreme Creator of all things, which by His will exist, come and have come into being. However, He is Transcendent to His own creation, His own existence is an unreachable mystery and He is the holder of all strength, power and wisdom above all that can be supposed. Therefore, the own existence of everything is a great mystery, and creation exists in mystery, so that no one can know the truth, and no one can know God, except through the revelation of God Himself in His Word. And as God is wonderful, and as He is good, He has pleased His blessed will to reveal Himself to man and bring to man His salvation. From the beginning, the Lord has been bringing the revelation of truth, and the revelation of Himself to man through His mighty acts of righteousness and salvation through the ages. God is exceedingly wonderful, most great, and almighty, perfect in wisdom and mighty in works, and it has pleased His will to reveal Himself to man, and He desires that man should know Him and learn His laws, His ways, and His will. The Lord is the One True God, a God of power, justice and holiness, and He has revealed Himself through the ages in the full extent of His Authorized and Revealed Word, The Holy Book which is the Complete Bible. It is necessary for man to know God, and everything we need to know about the Eternal is revealed to us in the full breadth of His blessed Word. Within this knowledge, we will discuss the seven spiritual attributes of God, the magnificent virtues of the Almighty's character that He manifests in all His great acts of power and sovereign intervention through the course of the existential times of Creation. He is the Almighty and Eternal God, Creator of the universe and of all dimensions, invisible, unreachable, incorruptible, immortal, dwelling in eternity and inaccessible light, the only one who exists above all being and existing, source of all existence whose own existence is unattainable, giver of life to every creature that feels, thinks and breathes, that governs all existential and superexistential realms that are within time and ultra-time, space and ultra-space, source and holder of all the strength and power that is in creation. He being the Supreme Ruler and Sustainer of all, God and Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus, the Only Begotten Son of His Image and Glory. To begin to know God, it is necessary to know His character, His moral essence, the spiritual virtues that define Him. Throughout the Bible, the power and character of God as the Supreme Creator, Provider of Life and Savior of all is revealed. He reveals himself most personally to Abraham as the Almighty God, and most forcefully to Moses as the Great I Am that I Am, the One Who Is that He Is and is in everything. Since He is the Almighty, Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent, He also reveals His spiritual attributes through the ages in His Word, and we should know the chief among them all. Remembering that the Love of God is His Supreme Gift and the essence of His own Being, and is above all these attributes mentioned here, just as Light is more than an attribute, but a domain of power that also defines the own God. Remembering that these attributes are not absolutely all, but seven were chosen among those that stand out in the Scriptures.
1. INTEGRITY
"For the LORD your God is the God of gods, and the LORD of lords, the great God, mighty, and terrible, who shows no respecter of persons, nor accepts reward;" (Deuteronomy 10:17)
Among the many spiritual attributes of God, one of them is that He is Integrity, He is incorruptible and immutable. He cannot twist truth, justice and judgment. He does not accept bribes, nor gifts, nor does he trade, nor does he favor anyone in his judgments. He is Exempt and Impartial. His weight on the balance is a single unit weight. He cannot practice wickedness, nor injustice, nor differentiate people in his judgments. He cannot negotiate His judgments, nor His laws, nor His justice. He is perfect and cannot be divided. He cannot be corrupted. He is Integrity.
2. UPRIGHTNESS
"Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he will teach sinners the way." (Psalm 25:8)
A second spiritual attribute of God is that He is Uprightness. He is the truth, knows perfect truth, and judges everything with perfect justice. He is of a single thought, of a single judgment and of a single truth. He's right. He has only one north and only one weight. In it there are not two words, and no shadow of variation. All your thoughts and designs are perfectly defined and determined. All His ways are very high and very well designed. He cannot err, nor fail, nor be deceived. His science is perfect, absolute, and very well determined. His reasons are symmetrical. Everything He does, on a greater plane, follows in one direction and in one common and universal direction. In Him there is harmony and agreement. All your calculations are coincident, exact and well defined. He does not distort or falsify His laws. He is determined, constant and unchanging. He is Upright.
3. FAITHFULNESS
"Know therefore that the LORD your God, he is God, the faithful God, who keeps his covenant and mercy to a thousand generations to those who love him and keep his commandments." (Deuteronomy 7:9)
A third attribute of God's character is that He is Faithful. He fulfills all that He promises. He is God of one Word, and He watches over His Word to fulfill it. The Word that comes out of His mouth will not become empty to Him, without fulfilling all that He has determined. He is a God who cannot lie. He is loyal, sacrificial, selfless, altruistic and perfect in patience. He is firm, immutable, and infallible. Everything He says He fulfills, both the promises of salvation and the promises of judgment. He is worthy of faith and remains to the end in all that He speaks. He cannot betray, nor cower, nor be defeated or vanquished. He has all power in heaven and on earth, and nothing can stop His hand when He is working. All that He speaks, and all that is in His Word, He fulfills. For Him everything is possible, He can do everything, none of His plans can be stopped and none of His promises will fail. He cannot be defeated or deceived, and He will not discard His Word. He is Immutable, and He will not cease to be who He is eternally. He is Faithful.
4. TRUTH
"But the LORD God is the truth; he himself is the living God and the everlasting King: the earth trembles at his wrath, and the nations cannot bear his indignation." (Jeremiah 10:10)
A fourth attribute of God's character is that He is True. And more than that, He is Truth itself. He is both True and He Himself is Truth itself. No one can find the Truth except in God. And being the Truth itself, whatever He does, and whatever is in His character is true. You can trust God, for He is the ultimate reality, the ultimate rationality, intelligence, power, strength, wisdom, knowledge, science, reason and truth. He is the reality of all realities, everything exists within Him, He gives existence to everything and nothing exists without Him. The truth is all there is, and there is nothing beyond the truth, for everything beyond the truth is the lie that simply does not exist. God is the truth, and at the same time he is also the Father of Truth himself. He created the truth within Him, because He is Truth itself. If we all exist, it is because we are part of the truth, and we are inside the truth, although not everyone practices the truth. God cannot lie or fall short of the truth. For Him everything is possible, except lying and practicing injustice. All that He speaks, and all that is written in His Word is the Unchanging Truth that cannot fail. Truth is an eternal domain, indivisible and indestructible. Truth was born before eternity, has always existed and will never ever cease to exist. Truth cannot be overcome, and never can be. Truth is the greater divine domain that is above everything, as if it were the right hand of God. Jesus, the Son of God, calls himself the Truth itself (John 14:6). God is Faithful and True, and everything He does is with Faithfulness and Truth. He is True.
5. GOODNESS
"For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all that call on thee." (Psalm 86:5)
A fifth attribute of God is that He is Good. He is kind and merciful to all who seek him. In every possible situation, His pleasure is to do us good, see our happiness and bless us. He does everything possible for His creatures to do justice, walk in the path of truth and be saved. He is even capable of suffering, in order not to trespassing His own righteousness, in order to be able to do good to as many as possible. He is so good and full of love that He gave His Only Begotten Son, Jesus, to die for the sins of the world, for the sake of His upright justice, and bring us salvation. His goodness is so great that it embraces all the creatures of heaven and lasts forever, for it has no end. The desire of God's heart is not to punish His creatures, but that they find the path of faith and justice so that He can do them all the more imaginable good that can exist forever. His creatures have free will, so not all of them can be contemplated by His goodness, for He is also just and will not violate each one's right to choose. He is so good that he respects free will, and sends unrepentant sinners to the proper place that each of them has chosen of their own accord. He cannot change. The essence of His nature is full of goodness, because He is good, full of grace and mercy to all who call on His Name and wait on Him. He desires good for all and delights in doing good, and he does everything with a view to good for each to the greatest possible extent. He does not wish evil upon anyone, nor can he practice impiety, nor tyranny, nor perversity. He's Good.
6. RIGHTEOUSNESS
"For the LORD is righteous, and he loves righteousness; his countenance is on the upright." (Psalm 11:7)
A sixth attribute of God is that He is Righteous. He is the holder of all power and all glory, and he judges everything and everyone according to the most absolute truth. He is no respecter of persons, nor does he accept gold or silver in exchange for favors. He perverts not neither right nor equity in His judgments. He is not blind, He sees everything, even the interior of the heart, with the most absolute vision. No one can deceive him, He is Omniscient and Wise. No one can defeat him, He is Omnipotent, and the Owner of all Power. No one can escape from His hand, not in heaven, not on earth or under the earth, and He does whatever He wants, because He is perfect in wisdom, in vision, and because He is righteous. He does not leave the wicked unpunished, nor the righteous unrewarded, though it may seem late, but he is infallible and quick to reward each one according to his works. He judges in Heaven and on Earth, though He is patient, and His reward is with Him in His right hand, to repay and give due wages to each one according to the fruit of his deeds very soon. He judges with truth and justice. He does not pervert the law, but sees absolutely everything and contemplates each one according to right justice. He is Righteous.
7. HOLINESS
"And ye shall be holy unto Me: for I, the LORD, am holy, and have set you apart from the peoples, that ye should be mine. " (Leviticus 20:26)
A seventh attribute of God is that He is Holy. This seems to be the greatest and most emphasized of the attributes of God's character in Scripture. He is Holy, infinitely Holy, absolutely separate from all sin, wickedness, perversity, lies, and iniquity that can exist. He cannot be struck by evil, nor overcome, nor deceived so that he can do injustice. He will never cease to be and to exist separate and infinitely above all evil that may exist. He is the Most High, He is Incorruptible, Perfect, Righteous, Pure and Holy, and cannot be overtaken by the wickedness or filth of any creature that may exist. He gave free will to His creatures, for He cannot be justified, nor loved, nor obeyed, nor worshiped but by the free, joyful, grateful, and decided will of those whom He created. One of the greatest ways to extol the Greatness of God and His Glory is to declare and give praise to His Supreme Holiness. No one can declare the holiness of God except by the Holy Spirit. Supreme holiness is the greatest attribute that differentiates God from His creatures, even though everyone must also be holy among those who belong to Him. He is the Holy of Holies, the Most High Almighty, and none is as pure and perfect as He is. The Word of God says that He is so pure that even the heavens are not pure in His eyes, and He is so holy that even in His angels He finds imperfections. The final judgment of sinners who despise the goodness of God shown in Jesus, and who do not accept His salvation, this judgment will be measured by the incorruptible justice and holiness of God, for they will have despised the sacrifice of the Son of God, and for them no there will be more opportunity for repentance, as it still exists today. Then see how terrible will be the judgment and fate of those who hate the truth, and remain unbelieving even after the Son of God died on a cross for their sins. God cannot allow sin to go unpunished precisely because He is a Holy God, and He cannot admit evil into His Blessed Kingdom, cannot admit sin and filth and depravity. This is why Jesus had to come into the world and die for our sins, so that the righteous justice from the judgment of God, who is Holy, would be satisfied by His innocent and sinless sacrifice, and so we would have a new opportunity for repentance, by faith in His Word, for the forgiveness of our sins, committed against an infinitely Faithful, Just and Holy God, and that we might be, through Him, forgiven and saved. God is the only one worthy of worship, in heaven and on earth, precisely because of His Supreme Holiness. This is the attribute that causes angels, cherubs, and seraphim to praise and worship him unceasingly in the eternal heavens, and men on earth, and every swarm of creatures in the higher universes and dimensions beyond. God is glorified in holiness, and this is something that only He has. His purity and holiness emanate a grace, a glory, a joy, a satisfaction, and an infinite life, which is more desirable than anything that can exist. He is unattainable, great, magnificent, majestic, wonderful and glorious beyond all that can be thought. And all this He emanates because of His Magnificent and Incomparable Holiness, and there is none that can compare to Him, nor to the splendor of His Glory and Greatness, which are from before eternity and which last forever, illuminating and filling with joy the entire unimaginable expanse of the Kingdom of Creation, which joyfully sings of His Grace and Goodness, in praise of His Glory and Sublime Holiness. He is eternally and absolutely separate, transcendent and elevated above all that exists, separate from all evil, from all that is understood and from all that is. He is wonderful. He is Holy.
CONCLUSION
So, beloved brothers and sisters, these are some of the attributes of God's character that we can understand through study and meditation in His Word, which brings us life and salvation, and to know better who He is, according to the sacred text. These attributes reveal in part what His character is like. And "as it is written: The things which eye has not seen, nor ear heard, and have not entered into the heart of man, are the things which God has prepared for those who love him." (1 Corinthians 2:9) nor is it in our own power to "reach the ways of God, or come to the perfection of the Almighty." (Job 11:7) And finally,
"With him is wisdom and strength, he has counsel and understanding. Behold, he breaks down, and it cannot be built again: he shuts up a man, and there can be no opening. Behold, he withholds the waters, and they dry up: also he sends them out, and they overturn the earth. With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his. He leads counsellors away spoiled, and makes the judges fools. He looses the bond of kings, and girds their loins with a girdle. He leads princes away spoiled, and overthrows the mighty. He removes away the speech of the trusty, and takes away the understanding of the aged. He pours contempt on princes, and weakens the strength of the mighty. He discovers deep things out of darkness, and brings out to light the shadow of death. He increases the nations, and destroys them: he enlarges the nations, and straitens them again. He takes away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way." (Job 12:13-24)
